Volunteer Opportunities

The Friends of Nancy Island & Wasaga Beach Park rely heavily on the support of community volunteers to further public awareness, support research projects, and facilitate special events that help to promote and protect Wasaga Beach Provincial Park’s natural and historical resources for future generations.  The following is a list of volunteer opportunities currently available:

 Piping Plover Guardian Program

 Calling all volunteers!  We are looking for both new and returning volunteers to help with our 2019 Piping Plover Recovery Program.  As a volunteer you will be involved in sharing information about the birds with the public, monitoring bird behaviour and spreading stewardship messages about our beach.  Interested and returning volunteers please visit http://pipingplovervolunteers.blogspot.com/ for more information.

Please click here to register as a Piping Plover Volunteer through Bird Studies Canada http://www.birdscanada.org/news/piping-plover-volunteers-ontario  Both new and returning volunteers must register through the Bird Studies Canada website (via above link).   Once registered, you will be contacted by Wasaga Beach Provincial Park’s Beach Stewardship Coordinator prior to beginning your volunteering.  All volunteers will be required to attend either one of the two training sessions at Nancy Island Historic Site:

 May 24 from 5:30pm – 7:30pm

 June 9 from 1pm – 3pm

 Ships and Sails: Wasaga Under Siege Volunteers

 This is a large scale event that relies on volunteers to assist with admission sales, golf cart shuttles, parking management, and refreshment booth sales.  To help out with this exciting event, please contact park staff at (705) 429-2516 or nancyisland@wasagabeachpark.com

 Here are some of the opportunities available:

 Stewardship

  • Planting Marram Grass for sand dune stabilization
  • Removal of Invasive Species such as Phragmites (Common Reed)
  • Maintaining native gardens at Nancy Island and Schooner Town Heritage Sites
  • Garbage removal in Piping Plover habitat areas

Monitoring and Education

  • Become a Piping Plover Guardian
  • Reporting sightings of Threatened Species such as Eastern Hog-nosed Snakes

Special Events

  • Assist with Wasaga Under Siege (collection of fees, refreshments, parking, shuttles etc.)
  • Assist with fundraising BBQs

Public Relations

  • Provide support for promotion of events and activities
  • Provide expertise and assistance with Website, Twitter and other promotional initiatives
